Artist

Quang Anh was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in 1989. Isolated and ostracized as a child due to a disability from the effects of ingesting cyanide, Anh began creating art as means of expression and self-soothing. Anh’s ability has been largely developed outside of the confines of conventional education. He attended, and now is currently a member of, The Fine Arts Association of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, after leaving secondary school to pursue his artistic education in 2004. Painting has developed into a passion for Anh, where he is able to express himself in ways not possible through speech.

Anh paints a variety of imaginative and figurative subjects, all emotive, lively scenes suggesting growth and community, depicted with an abstract, painterly technique. His use of abstraction works to articulate the gap between reality and perception, allowing us an entry point into his lived experience and relationship to the world. Using his artistic practice to give visibility to those with disabilities, he has formed his own language outside of the limited factors of structured spoken language. For Anh, language has become his color palette, the content and forms of his paintings, and the varied surface of his works. He has found new modes of expression, unconfined by institutions and their structures.

Anh has exhibited extensively within Vietnam, and won several awards, including recognition at the Biennale of the Young Artists, hosted by The Fine Arts Association of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

“For me, pure art is to inspire emotion in the audience rather than simply transferring ordinary ideas.”
